Mud was flying everywhere, high into the trees, out of the mud wallow and over everything in sight. Glorious, glorious mud. The elephants were having a magnificent time and this was apparent by the low rumblings of the older elephants and the odds excited squeal from the younger ones.

And the smell! The smell carried on the gentle breeze to us, so we could really appreciate the experience. I have to say the smell of the thick gloopy mud had a hint of vegetation, as smattering of dung and a massive dollop of sewage, all heightened by the heat of the day. It invaded all our senses.

We were on Safari in Mkhaya Game Reserve in the Kingdom of Swaziland and within 30 min of our first game drive we found these elephants having a wonderful time in the middle of the day. Some of the elephants ventured into the middle of the mud wallow and we could hear the suction noises as they pulled their feet out of the gloopy mess. Others were more contented staying on the periphery and expertly throwing mud over their backs in order to cool off from the heat of the day.

They were the first of the Big 5 to visit this wallow. The second were approaching to the left, weaving their way through the foliage and making a beeline for the cooling mud. Four white rhinos were measured up by the herd of elephants, the rhinos squared up to the elephants and a stand-off materialised. It was one of those questions that children often ask, “Who would win in a fight between an elephant and a white rhino?” In this case, the rhino.

The elephants leisurely moved away from the mud wallow, I suspected they had had their fill anyway, which still begs the question as to who would win between elephant and white rhino. The four rhino practically lept into the mud wallow and you really could feel content for them as they nestled their way into the cooling mud, the ultimate bed. It was relaxing to watch.

And then the third of the big five arrived at the mud wallow, three old ‘dagga boys’, old male buffalo. The buffalo surveyed the area, weighing up their chances to gain access to the mud wallow, the rhino didn’t even acknowledge them. The buffalo walk round the mud wallow, inspecting it from all angles, and then realised that this time, the wallow was not there.  They sauntered off into the bush in search of more accessible mud baths.

It was an extraordinary scene that we had just witnessed, just heard, and certainly smelt!

So who would win out of an elephant, rhino and buffalo?
